Head of Security, Compliance and Mission Operations

Austin · Full time, primarily in person, with travel

← All roles

Stellios Technologies is building advanced high power microwave and energy systems for defense, aerospace, and energy.

We are hiring a senior operator to own export control, security, compliance, safety, and mission operations as we scale. This is not a policy writing or risk avoidance role. Your job is to protect Stellios, its technology, its people, and its mission while finding the fastest lawful and safe path forward.

Compliance is an enabling function, not a veto function. When something cannot be done one way, determine how it can be done.

What You Will Own

  • Export control — ITAR and EAR, technical data handling, foreign person access, licensing workflows, international travel, controlled shipments, vendors, and DDTC coordination
  • Security — physical security, information security, sensitive technical information, visitor and access procedures, incident response, and readiness for future government security requirements
  • SOC and IT compliance — stand up the security and compliance systems we need as we scale
  • International operations — determine what may be discussed, demonstrated, shared, shipped, or contracted with foreign governments, defense companies, suppliers, and partners, then build the compliant path forward
  • Government operations — SAM and CAGE, contract compliance, representations and certifications, program and security requirements, and coordination with counsel and advisors
  • Facility compliance and safety — company level OSHA and EHS, fire and building code, permitting, facility access, emergency response, and operational safety, without importing unnecessary bureaucracy
  • Logistics — movement of components, expensive equipment, and sensitive hardware: freight, receiving, inventory, domestic and international shipments, and chain of custody where required
  • Vendor operations — machine shops, specialty vendors, outside fabrication, controlled drawings, and hardware movement, in support of engineering
  • Operating systems — the minimum SOPs, policies, controls, training, and records that keep Stellios safe and compliant. Automate aggressively and eliminate unnecessary process.

Engineering owns engineering. This role creates the operating environment that lets engineers build quickly and safely.

Our Philosophy

We want someone who knows the rules deeply enough to tell apart what is actually prohibited, what requires authorization, what requires additional controls, what can proceed immediately, and what people merely assume is prohibited.

If Option A cannot be done, bring us Option B. Protect the company without protecting the company from doing business.

Safety follows the same philosophy. Stellios intends to move extraordinarily fast while maintaining an exceptional safety culture. Speed and safety are not opposites. We require both.

Who We Are Looking For

A trusted operator with substantial experience in defense, military, government, or national security environments. Strong candidates have hands-on experience across several of the following:

  • ITAR and EAR export control operations
  • U.S. military or DoD operations
  • International defense and government engagements
  • Physical and information security
  • Security clearances and classified environments
  • OSHA, EHS, and technical facility operations
  • Government contracting and compliance
  • Logistics and controlled hardware movement
  • Machine shop, supplier, and vendor coordination
  • SOC and cybersecurity compliance

We strongly prefer someone who has personally operated these systems, rather than someone whose experience is primarily legal review, policy writing, or consulting. A former military operator with strong export control and operational experience would be particularly compelling.

You should be an enabler first, extremely trustworthy, calm in consequential situations, and capable of making independent judgment calls. You will work directly with the CEO, participate credibly in senior international defense conversations, solve operational problems personally rather than delegate everything, and have no tolerance for unnecessary bureaucracy.

This role requires access to U.S. export controlled information. Candidates must qualify as a U.S. person under applicable export control laws, including U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

The role is primarily in person in Austin and carries significant domestic and international travel.

Competitive compensation and meaningful equity.
